S002 [描述性拆分] Review of Dalmonte and Privitera on Vecchi’s Canzonette
An edition has been published, on high scholarly principles, of Vecchi’s Canzonette a sei voci. Following a description of the sources (single examples drawn from the three printed sources were consulted), the edition divides into sections that treat the poetry and the music separately. The criteria used in editing the poetry are, on the whole, prudent and well presented; and although discussion of one or two issues is unduly involved, this is never at the expense of clarity in the finished edition. Likewise, the criteria used in editing the music are dealt with in turn, largely on the authority of the theorist Lodovico Zacconi; and although the vexed question of triple time arises, the reader emerges relatively unscathed thanks to Privitera’s concise treatment of it. The music itself is well produced, indeed more so than in some earlier volumes in this series; but the print may be considered too small for the edition to be used in performance.
This book certainly achieves its stated aim, which is to provide a substantial and well-grounded introduction to and study of Vecchi’s six-voice Canzonette: the detailed textual and musical analyses in Chapters 2 and 3 characterize the pieces effectively, and Chapter 1 presents an engaging picture of Vecchi’s life at the time he composed the canzonettas. However, it is left to the reader to decide how far the findings of this study — in particular the formal archetypes — can be applied beyond Vecchi’s own pieces. Indeed, one consequence of Dalmonte and Privitera’s intentionally secluded view is that we are given little idea of exactly how Vecchi’s six-voice canzonettas compare, in anything other than a repertorial sense, to the more common three- or four-voice canzonetta or to other six-voice canzonettas of the period. Furthermore, one might ask, for the sake of argument, why Vecchi chose to categorize pieces such as ‘A dio, voglio partir, ti lascio, Aminta’ and ‘Non fuggir, non fuggir, ahi, non fuggire’ as canzonettas rather than as madrigals, given the character of the poetry, the ample scoring and the richly varied and imitative musical textures.
As it happens, Dalmonte and Privitera take us some way towards solving this fundamental problem of genre, although they do not raise it themselves. But without questioning the evident quality of this book, I do question a growing tendency to study the canzonetta — as the madrigal has been studied — in total isolation from its broader context in the secular vocal repertory of the late Cinquecento. Clearly we should not study the canzonetta simply with a view to discovering more about the madrigal; but to consider the one totally removed from the other overlooks an important element of interplay between genres at this time which needs to be understood if a true sense of their individual characters is to be established.
JONATHAN MORGAN
William Byrd: Gentleman of the Chapel Royal. By John Harley. pp. xvi + 480. (Scolar Press, Aldershot, 1997, £45. ISBN 1-85928-165-6.)
John Harley’s declared aim is ’to summarize the currently available biographical information about Byrd, and to provide a brief account of his music with particular emphasis on its chronology’. The first part of this study not only corrects and expands the pioneering work of Edmund H. Fellowes but also incorporates findings from a wide range of research by more recent scholars as well as the fruits of the author’s own labours in various record repositories. Painstaking work on the Byrd genealogy has illuminated many shadowy aspects of the composer’s origins and family relationships. Perhaps the most significant discovery is new evidence concerning his date of birth; this has hitherto been taken to be 1543, since in his will (proved in 1623) he states that he was then in his 80th year. But in testimony submitted to the Court of the Star Chamber, in his own hand and dated 2 October 1598, he describes himself as ‘of Stonden in the Conty of Essex gent. age of 58. yeares or ther aboutes’. Harley’s explanation for the discrepancy, namely, that the will was drafted a few years before Byrd signed it in 1622, seems plausible. Also worthy of mention is his theory that the name of the composer’s wife, Julian, became altered to ‘Ellen’ or ‘Helena’, either through ignorance or scribal error, in the records of the family’s recusancy in Essex, and that there are therefore no grounds for thinking that Byrd remarried shortly after moving to Stondon Massey. After initial misgivings I find this, too, altogether convincing.
旧说依凭 Byrd 的遗嘱(1623 年 probate〔遗嘱验证〕)里说他"in his 80th year",由此推算生于约 1543 年。 (Court of the Star Chamber)的证词,Byrd 在其中自称"of Stonden in the Conty of Essex gent. age of 58. yeares or ther aboutes"。 Harley 的解释是:遗嘱文本是"在 Byrd 于 1622 年签字之前几年就已拟好(drafted a few years before…signed it in 1622)",因此文中的年龄陈述反映的是草拟时点而非签署时点。
Gentleman of the Chapel Royal
While there is much to admire in the biographical part of this book, it is by no means entirely free from errors of fact or judgement. I mention some of them here. The year of Tallis’s death is given as 1583 (p. 5) and the publication date of Psalmes, Sonets and Songs as 1589 (p. 45), although the correct dates are given later. Thomas Appleby was reappointed to Lincoln Cathedral in 1541 after an absence at Magdalen—not Lincoln—College, Oxford (p. 36). Harley’s suggestion that Appleby was probably in touch with Tallis and others in the Chapel Royal who knew of Byrd’s promise—a notion allegedly supported by the fact that music by all three composers appears in the same collection (the ‘Gyffard’ partbooks)—is idle speculation that not only begs a number of important questions but flies in the face of what we know about when, how and where that collection was compiled. In the discussion of the difficulties Byrd experienced on account of his religion, the Act ’to retain the Queen’s Majesty’s subjects in their due obedience’ (23 Eliz. I, c. 1) is repeatedly and erroneously dated 1580. It is particularly irksome, having shared with Mr Harley my own thoughts on the composer’s recusancy, to find myself taken out of context and misrepresented on page 76 (n. 78), where he states: ‘Mateer suggests the possibility that Byrd and his wife may have been imprisoned as a result of their obduracy, but there is no documentary evidence’. In fact, as even a cursory reading of a recent article of mine will reveal, I am at pains to emphasize that such an outcome was most unlikely, despite the evidence that does exist for it (Music & Letters, lxxviii (1997), 9–10). The ‘Act to retain the Queen’s subjects in obedience’ (35 Eliz. I, c. 1), which dates from 1593 (not 1592 as stated in the discussion on page 81), was essentially a measure to suppress Brownists and Separatists, a fact to which its inclusion in the section on Puritans in G. R. Elton’s The Tudor Constitution testifies; in the context of his book, one wonders whether the author might not have been better served by 35 Eliz. I, c. 2, which was an act against Popish recusants.
23 Eliz. I, c. 1(’to retain the Queen’s Majesty’s subjects in their due obedience’)在 Harley 的叙述中被反复且错误地定为 1580 年;Mateer 在此处仅指出 Harley 的错误,但并未在原文中给出他认为正确的年份。 35 Eliz. I, c. 1(’to retain the Queen’s subjects in obedience’)实际于 1593 年通过(而非 Harley 在 p.81 所述的 1592 年),且该法案的本质目的是压制 Brownists 与 Separatists 等激进新教分离派——这一点可由 G. R. Elton 在《The Tudor Constitution》中将其收入 Puritans 一节得到佐证。
23 Eliz. I, c. 1、35 Eliz. I, c. 1、35 Eliz.

Harley hedges his bets on the question of whether or not Byrd withdrew from the Chapel Royal in the mid 1580s; after describing as ‘inaccurate’ William Weston’s statement that Byrd ‘sacrificed everything for the faith—his position, the court [etc.]’, he admits that ‘it may however contain a hint that Byrd had retired from a full role . . . or it may be that writing some twenty years after the event Weston was confused’ (p. 80). In fact, there is independent corroboration of Weston’s version of events in a certificate of recusants, drawn up in November 1585 by the sheriffs of London and Middlesex, where Byrd is described as ‘somtyme of her Ma’ Chappell’ (Public Record Office, SP 12/184, f. 15). Footnote 163 on page 97 provides valuable evidence for the existence of a teacher-pupil relationship between Byrd and Peter Philips, and quotes a phrase from a document in Spanish in the Austrian State Archive, Vienna—‘un musico famoso Uamado Burd, mro que fue de P°. flippi’—later repeated and translated as ‘a famous musician William Byrd, who was the master of Peter Philips’ (p. 364). Unfortunately, the transcription contains a number of errors, apparent even to someone who has never seen the original; for instance, ‘Uamado’, which cannot be construed as ‘Guillermo’ and is otherwise nonsensical, is almost certainly a misreading of ’llamado’—’named’ or ‘called’. To describe Sir Christopher Hatton, the dedicatee of
Byrd ‘sacrificed everything for the faith—his position, the court [etc.]’ 第二:Footnote 163 (p.97) 引述了维也纳奥地利国家档案馆一份西班牙语文献 ‘un musico famoso Uamado Burd, mro que fue de P°. flippi’,并在 p.364 译为 ‘a famous musician William Byrd, who was the master of Peter Philips’。 末句 ‘To describe Sir Christopher Hatton, the dedicatee of’ 故意未完,留待下段承接对 Hatton 的讨论。
本段引用的西班牙语短语 ‘un musico famoso Uamado Burd, mro que fue de P°. flippi’ 与英文译句 ‘a famous musician William Byrd, who was the master of Peter Philips’ 均按原文逐字保留;其中 ‘mro’ 是 ‘maestro’ 的缩写形式,‘P°. flippi’ 指 Peter Philips;’llamado’ 是西班牙语动词 ’llamar’ 的过去分词,意为 ’named’ 或 ‘called’。PRO(Public Record Office)即英国国家档案馆,原文以全称形式出现于此段。
Byrd’s Psalmes, Sonets and Songs, as ‘prominent in actions against Catholics’ (p. 102) is to exaggerate the Protestant side of what was a well-balanced and tolerant personality. As privy councillor and later Lord Chancellor, Hatton had, of course, certain responsibilities to the Elizabethan regime, but anyone who has read Eric St. John Brooks’s biography of the man cannot help but be impressed by the number of contemporary references there are to his Catholic sympathies. Harley displays a certain lack of understanding when he states that Byrd and his family ‘were summoned time and again before justices of the King’s Bench at Chelmsford and Brentwood’ (p. 127). As a branch of centralized royal justice the court of King’s Bench had ceased to be peripatetic by the name ‘does not appear in the Petre accounts after June 1608’ is incorrect: ‘Mr Birde and his sonn’ were his lordship’s guests at supper on Saturday, 23 December 1609.
第一,关于 Hatton:Harley 在 p.102 将 Byrd《Psalmes, Sonets and Songs》的题献对象 Hatton 描述为 ‘prominent in actions against Catholics’,Mateer 认为这是把一个"性格平衡且宽容"的人物过度地新教化。
第二,关于 King’s Bench:Harley 在 p.127 称 Byrd 一家 ‘were summoned time and again before justices of the King’s Bench at Chelmsford and Brentwood’。
第三,关于 Petre accounts 的年代断限:Harley 在 p.151 断言 Byrd 的名字 ‘does not appear in the Petre accounts after June 1608’,但 Mateer 指出 Petre 账册中明确记载了 ‘Mr Birde and his sonn’ 于 1609 年 12 月 23 日(星期六)晚间在 Hatton 府上(his lordship)共进晚餐——这是一条直接驳斥 Harley 断代的史料,使 Harley 所谓的 1608 年 6 月之后 Byrd 即从 Petre accounts 中消失的论断成为事实性错误。
Sir Christopher Hatton 是 Byrd《Psalmes, Sonets and Songs》的题献对象,原文称其在 p.102 被描述为 ‘prominent in actions against Catholics’。

23 Eliz. I, c. 1、35 Eliz. I, c. 1(针对 Brownists 与 Separatists,1593 年)以及 35 Eliz.
- 23 Eliz. I, c. 1:伊丽莎白一世在位第 23 年(按编年法案 1 号章节计)的法案,名称涉及 ‘retain the Queen’s Majesty’s subjects in their due obedience’。
- 35 Eliz. I, c. 1:伊丽莎白一世在位第 35 年的法案,名称为 ‘Act to retain the Queen’s subjects in obedience’,1593 年通过(不是 Harley 在 p.81 所写的 1592 年),实质上是针对 Brownists 与 Separatists 等激进新教分离派的压制措施,原文以 Elton《The Tudor Constitution》将其列入 Puritans 一节为佐证。
- 35 Eliz.
Byrd ‘sacrificed everything for the faith—his position, the court [etc.]’
Harley 在 p.151 断言 Byrd 之名 ‘does not appear in the Petre accounts after June 1608’;Mateer 以其中 1609 年 12 月 23 日(星期六)‘Mr Birde and his sonn’ 出席 Hatton 府晚宴的记载直接驳斥这一断代。
Much of the music-related portion of Harley’s book has a distinctly familiar ring, and comparing his comments with the corresponding pages of Joseph Kerman’s The Masses and Motets of William Byrd or of Oliver Neighbour’s The Consort and Keyboard Music of William Byrd will quickly make clear why. Any investigation of Byrd’s output would, of course, ignore the work of those two scholars at its peril, but Harley goes beyond merely taking their findings into account: his reliance on them borders on over-dependence. He also leans heavily on the writings of a great many lesser authorities and on the notes and commentaries attached to various volumes of The Byrd Edition and Musica Britannica (hereafter BE and MB). Full acknowledgement of this indebtedness is often—but not always—given, with the result that at times the unsuspecting reader is led to suppose that the views expressed are Harley’s own.
作者先用’熟悉的味道’(a distinctly familiar ring)勾画出读者翻阅时的直觉感受,再通过点名两部被视为Byrd研究基石的著作——Kerman的《The Masses and Motets of William Byrd》与Neighbour的《The Consort and Keyboard Music of William Byrd》——把这种熟悉感锁定到具体来源上。 Any study of Byrd’s output would … ignore … at its peril’先承认这两位学者是不可绕过的权威,随即用’verges on over-dependence’(border on over-dependence)把依赖程度从’必要的借鉴’推到’批评意义上的过度依赖’——这是本小节立论的关键转折。
本段同时引入了后文将沿用的两个缩写——BE(The Byrd Edition)与MB(Musica Britannica),二者作为Byrd作品的关键校勘/出版版本贯穿Harley的征引网络。
While the derivative character of his book does guarantee that much of what Harley says is sound, there are moments when his polished précis fail to render the full and accurate sense of his sources. As an example, Kerman writes on the Christmas music in the second book of Gradualia:
‘fail to render the full and accurate sense’点明可能的两种失败——信息不全或理解偏颇,二者皆属’过度依赖’的次生后果。
we are obliged first to take account of certain small musical and liturgical anomalies. In principle the Christmas music employs a choir with two sopranos, like nearly everything else in book 2, whether for four, five or six voices. Puer natus est nobis and O magnum misterium, however, are scored for SATB, like the Corpus Christi motets. On the liturgical front O magnum misterium and Beata Virgo belong to a category not found elsewhere in the Gradualia, the Matins respond, and O admirable commercium is not for Christmas at all but for the feast of the Circumcision, a week later. (The Masses and Motets . . ., p. 294)
(The Masses and Motets . .

- Gradualia:Byrd

Harley recycles this as follows:
The [Christmas] group includes two Matins responds, O magnum misterium and Beata Virgo, examples of a liturgical type that does not otherwise occur in Gradualia. The group does not form a fully coherent whole, since O admirabile commercium is for the Feast of the Circumcision, which falls a week after Christmas. There are other anomalies too. The usual scoring of the Christmas music, and indeed most of Gradualia II, is for two sopranos, tenor and bass. Puer natus est nobis . . . and O magnum misterium . . . however employ an alto in place of the second soprano, like the Corpus Christi music in the same book. (p. 336)
引文中 Harley 提出了若干关于 Byrd《圣诞》组曲(the Christmas group)的说法:(1) 该组曲包含两首 Matins 晨祷应答歌(Matins responds),即 O magnum misterium 和 Beata Virgo,并指出这种礼仪体裁在《Gradualia》中仅在此处出现;(2) 该组曲内部并不完全统一,因为 O admirabile commercium 实际上是用于「割礼节」(Feast of the Circumcision,即圣诞后第八天)的,比圣诞节晚一周;(3) 该组曲的常规编制是两个女高音(S、S)、一个男高音(T)和一个低音(B);(4) 例外情况是 Puer natus est nobis 和 O magnum misterium 用女低音(alto)替代了第二个女高音,这种编制与同卷的「基督圣体节」(Corpus Christi)音乐一致。
Within this short space Harley has misread Kerman in two important respects. ‘O magnum misterium’ and ‘Beata virgo’ do not constitute two Matins responds; the latter, despite being separately numbered by Byrd, is in fact the secunda pars of the former; and most of Gradualia II is not scored for two sopranos, tenor and bass. A similar misapprehension appears to lie behind Harley’s mystifying statement that the text unit ‘in die illa tremenda’ from ‘Libera me, Domine, de morte’ (1575 Cantiones) ‘moves to a firm cadence on A’ (p. 207). Kerman, who regards this as a Dorian work with g as final, describes the cadence in question as occurring ‘on the lower seventh degree’, that is, f, but Harley seems to have taken this to mean a seventh below the final.

第二个纠错则独立于 P0029,指向 Harley 在 p. 207 中对 1575 年《Cantiones》中「Libera me, Domine, de morte」一曲的判断:Harley 声称该曲中的文本单位「in die illa tremenda」在 A 上形成「明确终止」(a firm cadence on A)。
Dorian 是中世纪与文艺复兴教会调式之一,此处特指以 g 为 final(终止音)的 Dorian 调式,其自然第七级为 f(自 g 向上数到 f 即为七级,自 g 向下数到 f 也可视为「lower seventh degree」),而绝非 Harley 所误推出的 A。
Left to his own devices, Harley contributes little of value to our understanding and appreciation of Byrd’s music. At times the analysis consists of little more than chord-labelling. I don’t want to sound too prim about this, but I find his terminology disturbingly anachronistic, especially when Byrd’s melodic, tonal and structural procedures are compared with those of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Thus he describes the first point of the Lamentations (BE viii, No. 5) as ‘a precursor of the fugal opening of Beethoven’s late C sharp minor string quartet’ (p. 207), an observation which is lost on me. According to Harley, ‘There is little doubt that Byrd thought of key relationships as governed by the circle of fifths’ (p. 263), so it is hardly surprising that in his account of the keyboard Fantasia G2 in Neighbour’s nomenclature (MB xxviii, No. 62) he writes: ‘The first section . . ., ending in the “tonic”, is balanced by the second section, ending on the “subdominant”, rather like the opening of an eighteenth-century sonata’ (p. 200). One wonders which composer he had in mind. Moving on to Fantasia a1 (MB xxvii, No. 13), he tells us that the four quavers (recte semiquavers) in bar 41 become six and lead to a cadence on A at bar 77, which marks the end of the first main section. He continues:
An abrupt transition to F marks the start of the next section. The use of chords a major third apart was never Byrd’s most favoured method of linking sections . . . As though to compensate for the abruptness . . ., Byrd binds the new section to the previous one by introducing an inversion of the six-quaver [recte semiquaver] motive already heard. Such brusqueness is found at only one other place in the fantasia (bars 157–8), where a momentary change from a sharp key to a flat key corresponds with a change (shown in proportional notation) equivalent to an increase from six to nine crotchets in the space of a semibreve. (p. 202)
The contrast of tonal areas a major third apart is much more common than Harley allows; witness, for instance, Byrd’s frequent use of an F chord to open a new strain in his pavans and galliards in A. Besides, Elizabethan ears were well attuned to the relationship from their acquaintance with the passamezzo antico, of which it was an intrinsic feature. The ‘brusqueness’ to which Harley refers has indeed something to do with the rhythmic gearshift that occurs at bar 158, but there is no ‘change from a sharp key to a flat key’, not even a ‘momentary’ one. Byrd eschews a full close on A with an evasive cadence above which the b′, serving as an appoggiatura to the a′, is flattened to mitigate the tritone which would otherwise have arisen with the bass f; the harsh dissonance this creates with the a in the left hand is another contributing factor to the overall effect.
With few exceptions, Harley’s observations concerning the chronology of Byrd’s works are based on conclusions already reached, explicitly or implicitly, in previous studies. However, he does suggest a significantly earlier date for ‘Libera me, Domine, de morte’ (mid 1560s) than Kerman (early 1570s). He is entitled to his opinion, although I must dissent from it: there is ample evidence to suggest that the settings of both Byrd and Robert White were written in commemoration of Robert Parsons’s death in 1572, which is where stylistic considerations also place them, notwithstanding their cantus firmus structure. When discussing Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Mus. Sch. e.423, which was compiled for Byrd’s patron Sir John (later Lord) Petre and which contains pre-publication versions of songs and motets that appeared in the prints of 1588, 1589 and 1591, Harley shows that he is well aware that the order of copying does not necessarily represent the order of composition.
He is entitled to his opinion, although I must dissent"明确表态反对,并提出自己的两条证据链:一是 Byrd 与 Robert White 的同名设置很可能是为纪念 Robert Parsons 1572 年去世而作;二是风格判断也支持 1572 年,即使作品采用了 cantus firmus(定旋律)结构——这一限定词是关键的反驳,作者承认作品的体裁特征表面看可能支持更早年代,但综合证据仍指向 1572。

I wish he had exercised similar caution elsewhere, for at times the criteria he uses to establish a chronology are decidedly suspect. Thus ‘Plorans ploravit’, which stylistically belongs to the late 1580s despite its inclusion in the 1605 Gradualia, is placed after the accession of James I because its biblical text ‘refers to a king as well as a queen’. Melodic similarities between works are also taken as an indication of their contemporaneity. This is a dangerous path to tread if unsupported by other evidence; would Harley argue, for instance, that ‘Felix es sacra Virgo Maria’ (Gradualia I) is coeval with ‘In resurrectione tua’ (early 1580s, though not published until 1589) simply because they begin in the same way? Modal structure, not the composer’s inability to clear his head of a persistent tune, is a more likely explanation for recurrent motifs.
Modal structure, not the composer’s inability to clear his head of a persistent tune"是关键判断:相似动机源自调式体系自身的结构(mode 是 16 世纪教会音乐的理论基础,每种 mode 有其典型音程轮廓),而非作曲家"脑中挥之不去的旋律"。
Other points must be made more briefly. I would have liked a fuller investigation of the contentious issue of who composed ‘Similes illis fiant’—the central section of the psalm ‘In exitu Israel’ which ‘mr sheparde’, ‘mr birde’ and ‘mr mundye’ composed in collaboration. If the second attribution refers to the teenage William Byrd, is ‘mr’ an appropriate form of address, considering that the term was generally reserved for men of age and/or distinction? The source of the work—the second layer of the ‘Gyffard’ partbooks—has strong associations with the London church of St Mary-at-Hill, where William Mundy was parish clerk during the 1550s. The conduct in the next parish of St Botolph Billingsgate was a Thomas Byrd; could he, or the Thomas Byrd of the Chapel Royal, have been the ‘mr birde’ of the triumvirate, or is this just another red herring? Questions such as these need an airing. I cannot understand Harley’s rather dismissive treatment of Byrd’s five-part ‘Christe qui lux es’ (BE viii, No. 4); surely such an important vocal work deserves more extended coverage than that allowed by its being lumped with the instrumental settings of the hymn (pp. 163–4). Having been supplied with definitions of fairly uncontroversial terms like ‘canon’ and ‘motet’, the reader who is not familiar with Neighbour’s book would perhaps have appreciated some help with ’the mean style’ (p. 199). The companion to Tenbury MS 389 should now be referred to as the ‘McGhie’—not the ‘James’—partbook (p. 225), and on page 228 read ‘Edmund’ for ‘Thomas’ Campion. We are instructed about modality and the possibility of adding an ‘informal’ flat in certain modes (pp. 217–19), yet in his discussion of the 1575 Cantiones Harley characterizes ‘Memento homo’ as Ionian, rather than, more correctly, as mode 6 (Hypolydian) with ‘informal’ flat, and ‘Emendemus in melius’ as ‘Aeolian (G with two flats)’, which should surely be mode 1 (Dorian) with g-re as final. He may have copied the latter classification from Kerman’s 1963 Musical Quarterly article on that motet or from H. K. Andrews’s book on Byrd’s technique, but he should have picked up the correction in Kerman’s The Masses and Motets…, if not in Hearing the Motet, edited by Dolores Pesce, which probably appeared after Harley’s book had gone to press. In Table 14—the plan of The Carman’s Whistle—all references to ‘semiquavers’ should read ‘quavers’. In relation to Byrd’s setting of Walsingham, Bull raised the tune by a tone, not by a semitone (p. 252).
Other points must be made more briefly"起笔,预告将压缩处理多个次要但不可忽视的问题,可分为五个层次。 Aeolian (G with two flats)"。
Some of the appendices, particularly those dealing with the various wills and Byrd’s family connections, are to be welcomed; the value of others will prove less enduring. In his postscript (p. 366 n. 51) Harley comments on the inaccuracy of previous transcriptions of John Baldwin’s poem in British Library, R.M. 24.d.2, but his own attempt is not faultless, especially in the first dozen lines that he quotes. Appendix G reviews current thinking on ‘My Ladye Nevells Booke’ and the identity of its original owner. However, the bibliographical description that Harley attempts is quite incompetent. It is obvious from the position of the watermark and the direction of the chainlines that the manuscript is an oblong quarto, so when he states that it comprises 96 sheets of paper, he actually means 48, which yield its 192 leaves. His comments about the watermark, the size of gatherings and the method of compilation are also misguided; on the plus side, however, he does provide an index to the book based on MB xxvii–xxviii which, despite a few flaws, is quite useful. In conclusion, the catalogue of Byrd’s works contains several errors, mostly of a minor nature, such as the substitution of lower- for upper-case letters in the transcriptions of the various title-pages. Of greater consequence, in listing the contents of Gradualia I Harley misplaces ‘Optimam partem’ (No. 25) under the heading ’non-liturgical’ (it is, in fact, the communion of the preceding Mass), and he fails to mention ‘Ut videam’ at all—it is the secunda pars of ‘Unam petii a Domino’ (No. 21). Similarly, there are a few mistakes in the bibliography, the most misleading of which is that Gregory G. Butler’s article ‘Music and Rhetoric in Seventeenth-Century English Sources’ appeared not in Music & Letters, xix (1980) (sic), but in the Musical Quarterly, lxvi (1980), 53–64. A final reproach must be reserved for the proof-reading. The literary text has more than its fair share of typographical errors (of which the word ‘Miserere’ accounts for at least six), but the music examples are little short of appalling, and it is difficult to find one that is not disfigured by some irregularity in the notation, underlay or alignment.

然而 Harley 仍提供了一个基于 MB xxvii–xxviii(《My Ladye Nevells Booke》校勘版)的曲目索引,作者承认"despite a few flaws, is quite useful"——这是段中唯一的正面评价。 Butler《Music and Rhetoric in Seventeenth-Century English Sources》一文出处:Harley 标为《Music & Letters》xix (1980),实际应系《Musical Quarterly》lxvi (1980), 53–64,作者特意标注"(sic)“以示原书错误之荒谬。

While the biographical part of this book has a number of commendable features and breaks some new ground, Harley’s work as a whole disappoints by not offering more in the way of original and telling perspectives on the music. The author appears to believe that ‘bees’ honey is no less sweet for being extracted from flowers’ — to paraphrase a favourite Renaissance figure. This view, however, may not be shared by serious Byrd scholars, who are unlikely to be attracted by a book that relies for so many of its ideas on studies already in print. General readers, however, who perhaps find the thorough, analytical approaches of Kerman, Neighbour etc. somewhat daunting, or who want a general life-and-works in the Fellowes mould, may be tempted. If so, they should proceed with the utmost care.

DAVID MATEER

书名为《‘For the violls’: the Consort and Dance Music of William Lawes》(《‘为维奥尔琴而作’:威廉·劳斯的合奏与舞曲音乐》),作者 David Pinto,篇幅 194 页,由位于 Surrey 郡 Richmond 镇的 Fretwork Editions 出版社于 1995 年出版,定价 11.95 英镑,ISBN 号为 1-898131-04-X。
One immediately notices that there is something extraordinary about this book, for it begins with a $3\frac{1}{2}$-page ‘historical capriccio’ describing an imaginary concert at Whitehall on the eve of Strafford’s impeachment in 1641, at which consort music by William Lawes is about to be played. Call me a stick-in-the-mud, but this is not how I expect scholarly books to begin. Such a literary jeu d’esprit might be acceptable at the beginning if the rest were plain, straightforward prose, but there is more—not fictionalized musicology exactly, but an idiosyncratic literary style which is often arch, flippant, knowing, allusive and discursive and which tends to obscure rather than clarify. Sometimes I found myself having to reread passages to extract the meaning, and then not sure that I had done so. Admittedly, the more I read the easier the style became, and sometimes it became enjoyable for its own sake, though never really easy.
Even so, the book clearly repays the reader’s persistence. With regard to Lawes as a person, almost no biographical material is supplied beyond the occasional aside—enough merely to establish context. Nor does the book attempt to survey the entirety of Lawes’s instrumental output, which the title alone might be misread to promise. Instead, it deals only with the early three- and four-part ‘aires’, the ‘Royall Consort’ and the ‘Consort Setts’, the same body of work to which Murray Lefkowitz devoted two chapters (out of ten) in his William Lawes (1960). A great deal of source-work on English consort music has, however, appeared since Lefkowitz, and Pinto has by now made himself the leading authority on Lawes’s instrumental music: he has edited the ‘Consort Setts’ (1979), the fantasia-suites (Musica Britannica, xl (1991)), and both the ‘old’ and ’new’ versions of the ‘Royall Consort’ (2 vols., Richmond, 1995). In the present volume, Pinto works through these collections—omitting the fantasia-suites, which he now considers to be for violin(s) rather than ‘for Ye Viols’—offering commentary in what he modestly calls ‘a magpie progress, picking the shiniest trinkets out of a mass that cries out for more extended analysis’ (p. 141).
The first section of the book is devoted to the early works preserved in the ‘Shirley’ Partbooks (London, British Library, Add. MSS 40657–61), which are mainly in Lawes’s own hand and appear to have been started around 1626. (This is not particularly ’early’, one might think, given that Lawes was born in 1602; Pinto, however, accounts for it by holding that Lawes’s apprenticeship with Coprario continued until he was twenty-four.) These pieces include a number of small-scale three- and four-part ‘aires’ together with the early version of ‘Consort Sett I’, Lawes’s five-part début, which consists of a fantasia (No. 68) and a piece labelled In Nomine (No. 69), the latter composed before Lawes had mastered the particular plainsong appropriate to the form. (He was to return to the In Nomine form several times later on—usually with the correct chant, but in one instance with it cast in the major (No. 99).)
本小节含一处明确引文及页码:Pinto自评"a magpie progress, picking the shiniest trinkets out of a mass that cries out for more extended analysis"出自原书第141页。
- ‘Royall Consort’:
The next section deals with the ‘Royall Consort’—ten ‘setts’ or suites of dances which survive in ‘old’ and ’new’ versions. The earlier version probably dates from about 1630 and was scored for two trebles, tenor, bass and continuo. In this form it may represent the music as it was used for dancing at court—hence the title. The normal order of pieces was alman, corant (one or more of each) and a concluding saraband; Pinto credits Lawes with establishing this order in England, although the almand-corant pair was not unknown. Over the next decade or so, these suites were revised and rescored for two trebles and two basses, some of the writing was elaborated upon and ‘improved’, and additional preludial movements such as fantasias and pavans added, making the collection more ‘highbrow’—thus emphasizing its function as chamber music rather than dance music. I found the introduction to Pinto’s excellent edition of this music clearer and more informative than his treatment here. Both accounts give an idea of the process of reshaping that went on between the two versions and of the influences and changes in fashion that contributed to the final result—possible interaction with the music of Charles Coleman.
段落内部关系提示:“ten ‘setts’ or suites"中 setts 与 suites 同义,是17世纪英语对组曲的常见说法;“two trebles and two basses"的新配器中,tenor 被第二支 bass 取代,反映了室内重奏编制对低音声部的偏好;“preludial movements"指位于舞曲之前的非舞曲乐章,此处特指 fantasias 与 pavans;Pinto 此处指 David Pinto,其 Lawes《Royall Consort》校勘版是该领域的标准参考文献。

- Royall Consort:William Lawes
- Charles Coleman:17
